Farmers who lost land due to the expansion of a golf course received compensation at a ceremony in Myanaung Township on 7 May. The Myanaung Golf Course in Shadaw village-tract was expanded from five to nine holes on the land plots of local farmers under an agreement in 2001.
Some of the farmers recently sought to regain their land from the golf course, on the grounds that they had not been properly compensated. A government investigation found the farmers had not received any payment.
After negotiations between local farmers and the Township Golfers Association, a ceremony to present compensation was held at the hall of the Myanaung Township Administrator.
Officials of the golf course presented K370,000 per acre for 12.8 acres to farmers U Nyunt, U Thaung Hlaing and U Myint Oo through township level officials.–Nay Win Zaw (Myanaung)
