Two cutter suction dredgers-CSD 500 handed over to Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems

Two high Cutter Suction Dredgers- CSD 500 namely as Ayeyar Maung and Thalar Maung, bought from Netherlands based shipping company, Damen Shipyards Gorinchem were handed over to the Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems yesterday morning in Yangon.
At the handover ceremony, Union Minister for Transport and Communications U Thant Sin Maung said that the Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems bought the two cutter suction dredgers as per Component-3 of Ayeyawady Integrated River Basin Management (AIRBM Project) with World Bank loan to be able to carry out waterway development works in Ayeyawady River. As per Component-3 of the project, waterway development works from Mandalay to NaungU in Ayeyawady River, upgrading waterway measurement systems, installation of 24 hours waterway signs and developing affordable and safe shipping were being implemented.
Among the dredgers carried out the waterway development works in the whole country, the most highest-capacity dredger can only dig 400 cubic metres per hour and the CSD-500 dredgers will be able to dig 1000 cubic metres per hour.
Moreover, Yangon-Mandalay ships will be able to travel 24 hours a day in any season and it will support the flow of goods in the country at low cost, said the Union Minister.
Ambassador of the Netherlands in Myanmar Mr Wouter Jurgens said that the Netherlands would be always ready to cooperate with Myanmar for the water resources management works and water related natural disasters management works.
The Union Minister and the Ambassador exchanged gifts and the representative of DAMEN company handed over the documents relating with the dredgers to U Win Hlaing, the acting Director-General of the Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems.—MNA (Translated by Ei Phyu Phyu Aung)
