Two flyovers being built on Yangon circular railway

As part of the circular railway upgrade, Myanma Railways is constructing two flyovers on the Yangon circular railway for the convenience of passengers.
“There are 26 flyovers on the Yangon circular railway. Among them, nine flyovers need to be upgraded because of their low height. The remaining flyovers are high enough for the trains to pass under them. Currently, MR is upgrading the Ahlon and Insein (Mingyi) flyovers,” said U Maung Cho, the engineer from the Mahlwagon factory of MR.
“The Ahlon flyover is 31 feet and 6 inches wide and 12 feet and 6 inches high. So, the drainage canal cannot be built between the bridge and the railway to protect against floods in the rainy season. Sometimes, trains have to stop at the Ahlone railway station during rains. Therefore, MR will upgrade the flyover to increase its height to 17.5 feet and width to 57 feet. We will be able to dig the drainage canal after upgrading the flyover. The width of the four-lane flyover will be extended to 44 feet. MR will spend K200 million from this year’s on upgrading the bridge, which is expected to be complete in February, 2020,” he said.
MR has constructed only one arm of the forked flyover in Insein. It did not construct the other arm of the flyover in the direction of Mingyi road because of budget constraints. Now, MR will construct the remaining arm of the flyover. The flyover will be 441 feet long, with the approaching road measuring 112 feet and 9 inches. MR will spend K2,000 million on the construction of the flyovers.
MR plans to complete the construction of the Ahlon flyover by January, 2020 and the Insein flyover by the end of 2020. Among the nine bridges under construction, two bridges are being constructed this month, and the remaining will be constructed next year, depending on the budget.—Myint Maung Soe
