UEC, IRI sign MoU on promoting inclusiveness in 2020 general elections

Union Election Commission-UEC and International Republican Institute-IRI signed an MoU on promoting inclusiveness in the 2020 general elections yesterday at the UEC office in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.
The signing ceremony was attended by Chairman U Hla Thein and members of the commission and officials from the UEC office.
Speaking at the event, the UEC Chairman said Union Election Commission cooperated with International Republican Institute in the past, conducting trainings for political parties and increasing women and youths participation in the elections.
He added that all political parties are needed to equally participate in the trainings, stressing the need to conduct trainings focusing ethical codes, laws and bylaws for political parties and representatives.
The UEC is committed to conducting the 2020 general elections in accordance with the five norms of free, fair, transparent, crediable and reflecting the will of the people in cooperation with political parties, civil society organizations and international organizations.
Afterwards, Mr Jeremy Liebowitz, the Resident Program Director of IRI expressed thanks to the cooperation of the UEC for the IRI’s achievements in the past. He pledged to promote the inclusiveness especially participation of women and youths in the 2020 general elections. He also thanked the UEC for signing the MoU with the IRI.
Next, U Khin Maung Oo, the Director-General of the Union Election Commission, and Mr Jeremy Liebowitz, the Resident Program Director of IRI signed the MoU, and the ceremony concluded. — MNA (Translated by Kyaw Zin Tun)
