Union Chief Justice attends 11th International Legal Forum of Asia-Pacific Region through videoconferencing

The Union Chief Justice joins the 11th International Legal Forum of Asia-Pacific Region online yesterday.

Union Chief Justice U Htun Htun Oo attended the 11th International Legal Forum of the Asia-Pacific Region, which was organized by the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation through videoconferencing yesterday afternoon from the Supreme Court of the Union, Nay Pyi Taw.
First, as the host, Mr Vyacheslav Lebedev, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation made his welcome speech. Then, Union Chief Justice U Htun Htun Oo, together with the Chief Justices of the Asia-Pacific Region and the Heads of Delegate attended the Forum, delivered speeches respectively.
And then, the Union Chief Justice took part in the session of the Forum under the topic of ‘Economic Dispute Resolution Procedures in Asia-Pacific’. In his discussion, the Union Chief Justice said the role of justice sector institutions has a huge effect on economic performance. The Myanmar Judiciary enhances the dispute resolution mechanisms for judicial and non-judicial (ADR) to be compatible with increasing foreign investment and trade. According to the Arbitration Law enacted in 2016, both foreign and local companies can resolve their disputes by arbitration and domestic and foreign arbitral awards are now enforced in competent courts. The Supreme Court of the Union of Myanmar always seeks the possible ways to bring about the mutual benefits of the judiciaries in the region. In 2020 the Memorandum of Guidance (MoG) as to Enforcement of Money Judgment between Myanmar and Singapore judiciaries was signed. As the court dispute resolution mechanism for commercial disputes, the Supreme Court of the Union of Myanmar is making a feasible study on the commercial court and specialized benches. And the Case Study Book on International Transaction is issued for judges to learn the international best practices.
The Union Chief Justice also discussed that, at present, Myanmar courts try commercial cases within their jurisdiction and the commercial judgments are available for court users and the public on the website. Also, the Court-Led Mediation System has been introduced in 2019 to settle the disputes in a time and cost-efficient manner by consensus of the parties. With significant results and good feedback, the system is to expand nationwide by 2022 and try to have a suitable amendment of legislation in the Code of Civil Procedure. In addition, the Union Chief Justice concluded that the Myanmar Judiciary has been cooperating with other judiciaries regionally and internationally by signing bilateral memorandums of understanding, participating in judicial conferences, seminars and training.
Also present at the Forum together with the Union Chief Justice U Htun Htun Oo were the Justices of the Supreme Court of the Union and officials concerned.—MNA
