Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr Win Myat Aye attended the meeting on the systematic care of elderly persons at homes for the aged during the COVID-19 period through videoconferencing yesterday morning. The online meeting was also attended by responsible persons from the homes for the aged, region and state Social Welfare Officers and officials from the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.
At the meeting, the Union Minister said to the responsible persons of the homes for the elderly in states and regions, including Nay Pyi Taw Council Territory, to follow the guidelines and instructions issued by the Ministry of Health and Sports in caring for the elderly; to provide necessary protection and assistance and to systemically implement the standard guidelines of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.
Director-General for the Department of Social Welfare Dr San San Aye explained the standard guidelines for caring the elderly at homes for the aged during the COVID-19 period and discussed the requirements with the responsible persons of these care centres. In the afternoon, the Union Minister and party met older people with disabilities who received grants during the COVID-19 period and encouraged them.
At the ceremony, the Union Minister said the ministry had provided the monthly social pension to ensure that all seniors to have equal benefits by the 2016 Elderly Law. In addition to that, in 2019-2020 financial year, a total of 101.9 million kyats from the Department of Rehabilitation was provided for a total of 3,397 older people with disabilities and homeless elderly aged 60 and above, at a rate of 30,000 kyats each during the COVID-19 period.
