Union Minister U Kyaw Tin attends 4th MLC Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Luang Prabang, holds bilateral discussion with Chinese Foreign Minister

The Myanmar delegation led by U Kyaw Tin, Union Minister for International Cooperation, attended the Fourth Mekong-Lancang Cooperation (MLC) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in Luang Prabang, Lao PDR on 17 December 2018.
The meeting was convened under the theme of “Enhancing Partnership for Shared Prosperity” and co-chaired by Mr. Saleumxay Kommasith, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Lao PDR and Mr. Wang Yi, State Councillor and Minister for Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China with the participation of Mr. Hor Namhong, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, and Mr. Pham Binh Minh, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam.
The meeting featured in-depth discussions and reviewed on progress and future direction of the MLC cooperation including implementation of the MLC projects funded by MLC Special Fund and the outcomes of the MLC Leaders” meetings. The Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to moving forward the MLC cooperation in the spirit of friendship, good neighbourliness and equality to achieve national and regional prosperity. Besides, the Ministers endorsed a list of projects to be implemented by the MLC Special Fund. The list includes 19 projects proposed by Myanmar. A joint press communiqué was also issued after the meeting.
In the evening of 16 December, Union Minister U Kyaw Tin accompanied by U Ko Ko Naing, Myanmar Ambassador to Lao PDR, U Win Zeyar Tun, Deputy Director General from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and members of the Myanmar delegation, met Mr. Wang Yi, State Councillor and Minister of Foreign Affairs of China at the Pullman Hotel and Resort. The two Ministers cordially discussed matters related to strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries including China’s support for Myanmar peace process, bilateral economic cooperation, infrastructure projects under the OBOR initiative, increasing the number of Myanmar project proposals under the MLC cooperation. They also exchanged views on continued cooperation at the United Nations fora, and the measures taken by Myanmar to resolve the Rakhine issue. Later, the Myanmar delegation attended a dinner hosted by the Lao Foreign Minister in honour of the visiting delegations from the Mekong-Lancang countries.
The Mekong-Lancang Cooperation was established following the initiative put forward by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang at the 17th ASEAN-China Summit held in Myanmar in 2014 to foster cooperation for sustainable development of the Mekong region. The MLC is a sub-regional cooperation framework officially launched in 2016 among six Mekong-Lancang countries comprising of Cambodia, China, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam. Initially, it focused on five priority areas namely connectivity, production capacity, cross-border economic cooperation, water resources, agriculture and poverty reduction. It will be expanding cooperation in the areas such as education, culture and health, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.—MNA
