Union Minister for the Office of the State Counsellor U Kyaw Tint Swe received Mr. Peter Batchelor, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme, and Mr. Johan Cels, Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees at 10:30 hrs today at his office in Nay Pyi Taw.
During the meeting, the UNDP and the UNHCR discussed the extension of MOU signed between the Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population, United Nations Development Programme and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees on 6 June 2018 to assist the efforts of Government of Myanmar in undertaking the repatriation process for the displaced persons from Rakhine.
The Tripartite Agreement will expire on 6 June 2019. UNDP and UNHCR on 7 March 2019 wrote to Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population their willingness in principle to extend the MOU. The concerned Ministry had on 9 March 2019 also informed the UN Agencies its readiness to renew the MOU. At today’s meeting, the Union Minister reaffirmed the readiness to extend the MOU for another one year.
U Myint Thu, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other Officials also attended the meeting.
