University Team won the Myanmar National League 2 after trouncing the Young Boys team 5-0 in the final match played at Thuwunna Training Ground in Yangon yesterday.
At the same time, Dagon Star United played a 1-1 draw against the Junior Lions team in another final match.
Both games are important for the championship, and the team that wins the match between Dagon Star United and Junior Lions could be the champion, but the university team won the championship because of the big win. The University Team had a lesser chance than the other two teams to bag the championship title and needs to win the last game.
Another match’s draw made the University Team the Champion.
The award-giving ceremony was held after the match and the champion University Team got K13 million, and first runners-up Junior Lions achieved K10 million, and Dagon Star United got K7 million along with medals for each player.
Dagon Star United attacker Phoe Chit Ko won the most scoring award and got K500,000 as an award. After the tournament, the champion University Team won six games, three draws and three losses in 10 games, and earned 21 points, while the Junior Lions team was second with 20 points and the Dagon Star United team was third with 20 points.
The Junior Lions team and the Dagon Star team had the same score, but Junior Lions finished second with only a goal difference.
Junior Lions finished second, but the Myanmar U-19 youth national team is competing to gain tournament experience, so they will not be allowed to advance, while the third-placed Dagon Star United will be allowed to play in the MNL next season along with the champion University Team. — Ko Nyi Lay/GNLM
