Vice President Dr Sai Mauk Kham inspected a construction site Friday at a college in Lashio, accompanied by Dr Maung Maung Htay, Deputy Minister Dr Zaw Min Aung and Dr Win Myint.
The principal of the Lashio Education College and the deputy minister reported to the vice president on construction of buildings in the 2015-16 fiscal year and courses for trainees.
After hearing the reports, the vice president said there is a shortage of teachers, especially in small towns, and the government has been attending to the needs of the education sector as much as possible.
Thanks to the efforts of the president during one of his foreign trips, English language teachers were sent to states and regions in cooperation with the British Council, the vice president said, before urging teachers to try to improve their own abilities, as well as those of students.
Afterwards, the vice president and party proceeded to Lashio University and met with the rector and faculty members.
The rector reported to the vice president on construction of new buildings for the university. The vice president said the image of the university will improve only when its graduates can compete with those of other universities.
The vice president said it is necessary to link with international universities for research and development.
The government has been increasing the education budget year by year and the ministry of education is in the top five priorities among over 30 ministries, according to the vice president. In conclusion, the vice president urged faculty members to exert efforts for the future of the country.
Later, the vice president attended the coordination meeting of second-level officials of Shan State in Lashio.
Chief Minister of Shan State U Sao Aung Myat, State Minister Col Aung Thu, Deputy Minister Dr Maung MaungHtay, Deputy Minister Dr Zaw Min Aung and Deputy Minister Dr Win Myint reported to the vice president on water supply, measures for development, construction of a nunnery, upgrading of schools and healthcare services. After hearing the reports, the vice president urged the officials to try to improve public services including water, electricity supply and healthcare.
