Accurate statistics are essential to the formulation of sound policy, Vice President U Nyan Tun said Tuesday at a meeting of the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development.
U Nyan Tun, also a patron of the statistics committee, said economic and social data needs to be reliable and consistent with practice.
He said Myanmar would work with organizations such as the World Bank to develop a statistical system compatible with the practices of the United Nations.
Union Minister Dr Kan Zaw, chairman of the statistics committee, said the ministry is working together with the World Bank to draft a national-level strategy to ensure the norms of UN’s Fundamental Principle of Statistics and ASEAN Code of Statistics.
Myanmar has amended a bill on collecting facts and figures with the assistance of the Asia Development Bank, and has submitted it to the Union Attorney General’s Office.
The Fourth Session of the ASEAN Community Statistical System Committee Meeting and the introduction of the EU-ASEAN Compass Program were held in Nay Pyi Taw from October 14 to 16.
