Virtual meeting held to support in drafting Occupational Safety & Health Law

The Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population held virtual discussions to support in drafting the Occupational Safety and Health Law in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday. Union Minister U Thein Swe, Deputy Minister U Myint Kyaing, Permanent Secretary U Myo Aung, Liaison Officer Mr Donglin Li of ILO office in Yangon, Senior Technical Advisor Ms Mariana of ILO Vision Zero Fund, International Association of Labour Inspection Chairman Mr Kevin Myers, General Secretary Mr Ho Siong Hin, experts and officials of Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower joined the meeting.
At the meeting, the Union Minister said he welcomed the participation of ILO members and international experts in enacting the rules to protect the workers with safe and secure working environment and to promote scoping safe workplaces and health issues. Occupational safety and health issues play key role for the economic productivity of the country while challenges are faced daily in these sectors together with the development of the country, said the Union Minister, adding that productive capacity, safety and hygiene workplaces could be developed by the occupational safety and health law framework.
The workplace safety and heath system are being carried out in the respective sectors under the separate laws, rules and organizations in Myanmar and the Factories and General Labour Law Inspection Department drafted the Occupational Safety and Health Law and Pyidaungsu Hluttaw approved it in March 2019, he said. The further rules, orders and directives will be released depending on the situation and they will be in place with the approval of the President, said the Union Minister, adding copying laws and rules of other countries will not be suitable for Myanmar.
Liaison Officer Mr Donglin Li pledged to support the technical support in making law and ILO members, officials of IALI and Director–General for Factories and General Labour Law Inspection Department U Nyunt Win discussed their suggestions and performance regarding with the rules.—MNA (Translated by Khine Thazin Han)
