Watermelons, muskmelons get 30% price rise

With the resumption of sale of watermelons and muskmelons in Muse 105 Mile trade zone, the prices of watermelons and muskmelons have risen 30 per cent in the first week of March in the border area, said U Sai Khin Maung, secretary of Muse 105 Mile Fruit Wholesale Centre.
The bilateral trade between China and Myanmar has been suspended for more than 20 days because of the coronavirus outbreak in China.
He said: “The Chinese government has attempted to control the virus to be able to resume their businesses. We expected that the market condition will become better in the very near future.”
Although the trade route to China will be opened in a few days, the seven states, the virus outbreak zones, are still missing the markets.
Currently, 855-category watermelon truck (16 tons) is worth between 8,000 and 15,000 Yuan while the price of Taiwan AAA-AA watermelon is ranging from 20,000-32,000 Yuan per truck. The price of golden muskmelon is ranging from 2.2-3.8 Yuan per kilo while the Wukhone watermelon is ranging from 2.5-4.3 Yuan per kilo. The Chinese Yung exchange rate hit K203 today.
Though 855-category watermelon market is lost in Muse 105 Mile trade zone the price of Taiwan AAA-AA watermelon ranged from 10,000-17,000 Yuan per truck. Watermelons and muskmelons are considered export items to China and a large quantity of the fruits will be harvested until the end of May.
Myanmar exports more than 800,000 tons of watermelons and 150,000 tons of muskmelons every year. After coronavirus breakout, only 200,000 tons of watermelons and a small volume of muskmelons have been shipped to external markets in the meantime. —GNLM (Translated by Hay Mar)
