The 102-year-old Wazira cinema will be conserved as an archaeological museum, according to the Ministry of Information.
The Excelsior cinema was constructed in 1920 and decorated with 16th- to 18th-century Beaux-Arts-style architectural fusion of French architecture and figurines.
Currently, the building is under systematic repair under the guidance of the ministry.
The cinema was originally named Excelsior and renamed “A1 Cinema” in 1942 and “Wazira” in 1968.
At present, it is planned to make the Wazira Cinema not only a movie theatre but also a venue where plays, puppet shows, dance, music festivals, and international film festivals are held.
In addition, it will make a place to show old movies, puppet shows and other film shows on weekends.
The ministry also urged the officials to meet the standards of an ancient cinema. — TWA/GNLM
