[dropcap font=”0″]T[/dropcap]he sun brings light into the world through its beams. It is a source of energy and can drive the world with its infinite power from the centre of the solar system. It is the best source of light for the world.
When the moon passes between the sun and the earth, partially or totally, it is termed a solar eclipse in which the light of the sun is blocked temporarily. Although all creatures require the sun, it is a natural phenomenon that the sun disappears in some parts of the world and night falls.
However, the sun rays also have harmful effects if not filtered by the atmosphere, especially by the ozone layer. Harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation include sunburn. Chronic effects of UV exposure can be much more serious, with life threatening, premature aging of the skin, suppression of the immune system, damage to the eyes and skin cancer.
On one hand, the sun is useful for humans, but on the other, it also packs tremendous danger. The atmosphere of the earth blocks more than 90 per cent of the sun’s UV radiation from penetrating through the atmosphere. With the ozone layer damaged, this radiation from the sun could eventually kill much of the life on land and near the surface of oceans and lakes, and disrupt the food chain.
Therefore, the sun is a benefactor for creatures. Meanwhile, it is also a predator for the earth if it is allowed to directly strike the planet.
