Working Committee on resettlement of IDPs, KHCC hold third meeting

The Working Committee on Resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Kachin State and Kachin Humanitarian Concern Committee (KHCC) organized their third coordination meeting at the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.
The meeting was held in accordance with the COVID-19 health guidelines.
Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr Win Myat Aye said that his deputy minister has led the working committee to implement resettlement of IDPs in Kachin State.  Since taking office, the government has focussed on the affairs of ethnic people and peace process to ensure resettement of Kachin IDPs in accordance with the ministry’s policies and strategic procedures, he said. He continued that “National Strategy on Resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and Closure of IDP Camps” was already drawn up, and the works that are included in the strategy will be undertaken. The national strategy will help the ministry effectively cooperate in resettlement of IDPs in Kachin State, and a pilot project was already set up, he added.  Rev Dr Hkalam Samson, his capacity as the Chairperson of KHCC, said that the step-by-step works on resettlement of IDPs are a move toward peace. The purpose of the third meeting will focus on sending back IDPs to their places of origin soon, smoothly and safely with dignity and conducting educative programmes for locals, he added. Rev Dr Hkalam Samson urged the attendees to conduct humanitarian mine clearance activities, and carry out social protection and drug rehabilitation works, and also stressed the importance of returning IDPs to their natives peacefully.
The meeting was attended by Union Minister Dr Win Myat Aye, Deputy Minister U Soe Aung, Kachin State’s Security and Border Affairs Minister Colonel Nay Lin Tun, Social Affairs Minister U Nay Win, Command Staff Colonel of Northern Command Colonel Tun Nay Linn, the working committees’ members and KHCC’s officials led by Chairman Rev Dr Hkalam Samson, who is also the chairman of KBC. —MNA (Translated by Khine Thazin Han)
