Yamethin township will cover 60 acres of chilli pepper under Food Safety Project (FSP) and the drying machines will be used to reduce the level of fungal contamination in peppers, said U Than Win, deputy officer of Yamethin Agriculture Department.
In compliance with the Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), the fresh chilli peppers will be processed using solar dryer and mobile gas dryer in a short time. It will help boost the quality of peppers and reduce the level of fungal contamination in the peppers.
“Yamethin’s weather condition is suitable to chilli pepper cultivation. The growers yearly plant the chilli peppers. The growers has done land treatment and the plantation will start this month. The dryers help the processing stages, excluding impurities such as sand and reducing the level of fungal contamination in the peppers. The dried peppers fetch a good price”, he continued.
Last financial year, there were 50 acres of chilli peppers in Yamethin Township. Those peppers are systematically dried and producers can reduce the level of fungal contamination. The growers are financially doing well as they link with value-added businesses in Sagaing Region, beyond local growers. Thus, 60 acres are projected to be cultivated under the GAP this FY. — Min Htet Aung (Mandalay sub-printing house)/ GNLM
