Workers are preparing to transport betel leaves at a wholesale trading centre in Mandalay.

Due to flood, betel leaf production has declined in Yangon Region, therefore buyers from Yangon have made orders for betel leaves produced in Mandalay Region.

“It doesn’t rain in Mandalay. We have based at Mandalay downtown and betel leaves are transported from other towns. The trading is not bad now. Most of the orders are made from Yangon.  Betel leaf plantations were flooded in Yangon. So the trading here has increased. The second largest buyer is Shan State’s Taunggyi,” said an official from Thein Min Htay Family betel leaf trading in Mandalay.

The betel leaf market is doing well in July and this month, August.

“We don’t trade high-grade items, just Mandalay-produced betel leaves. The market was not much good three months ago. The trading increased in July and August. But it doesn’t mean the price is good because it is typical in monsoon season,” he said.
