According to the Yangon Region Public Transport Committee (YRTC), there were more than 44,000 traffic violation cases during the eight months of 2024 from 1 January to 23 August. There are 44,809 cases in total including YBS companies’ list of traffic violations cases by month, arrests, complaints via Facebook, driving through red lights, overspeeding, lane deviations, reckless driving, other cases, township crossing, long stoppage time, racing, overtaking and improper conversations.
Among these cases, there were 40,562 arrests, among which were 24,131 cases of driving with the side door open, 7529 cases of overtaking and 4155 cases of not stopping properly.
“YRTC mainly investigates and arrests drivers who violate traffic rules. There are monitoring and arrests from the YBO Control Centre, and there are also monitoring and arrests from the YRTC Disciplinary Department. There were 44,809 cases of rule violations from January 2024 to 23 August,” said YRTC’s joint secretary U Lyan Cing Mang.
YRTC inspects and monitors 10 routes for traffic rules with 10 inspection teams. Moreover, 120 staff are made into small groups and assigned at YBS routes and four inspectors are employed at 16 YBS bus stops. The Yangon Bus Operators (YBO) are also monitoring YBS drivers and taking action against those who compete with each other, violate traffic rules and overtake others.
There are 21 YBS companies under the supervision of YRTC, which operate 131 bus lines, running every day with 3,800 vehicles to serve about 1.4 million commuters in Yangon.
