Shwebo District Agriculture Dept completes cultivation of over 1 mln acres of monsoon crops

More than 1,020,000 acres of various pulses, oil crops, sugarcane, cotton, kitchen crops and other crops have been cultivated in Shwebo District, Sagaing Region, said U Tin Maung Swe, head of Shwebo District Agriculture Department.
During the monsoon season of the 2020-2021 financial year, over 1.4 million acres of monsoon crops are projected for planting across the six townships of Shwebo District. The cultivation commenced in May 2021 and about 1,025,000 acres have been planted so far. The department has covered 73.09 per cent of projected acres.
Last FY 2019-2020, the district saw cultivation of 1,340,000 acres of rice, various pulses and beans, edible oil crops, sugarcane, cotton, kitchen crops and other crops in the district.
“This year, the number of the monsoon crop acres has increased as Thaphanseik dam can supply irrigated water for 250,000-300,000 acres of summer paddy crops. The projected acres are slated to finish by September-end,” U Tin Maung Swe explained.
The projected monsoon acreage includes 221,493 acres in Shwebo Township, 288,468 in Wetlet, 285,054 in KhinU, 131,781 in YeU, 175,720 in Taze and 299,641 in Dabayin, totalling 1,402,157 acres in Shwebo District.
Last year, over 200,000 acres of monsoon crops in Shwebo, over 280,000 in Wetlet, over 270,000 in KhinU, over 120,000 in YeU, 170,000 in Taze and 290,000 in Dabayin townships were seen in the district.
Additionally, Shwebo District Agriculture Department is raising awareness of agriculture and distributing the pedigree crop seeds to the farmers. The farmers can contact the department for enquiry, the department stated.—Lulay/GNLM
