Myanmar expats in Singapore obliged to pay income tax from 12 Dec

The Myanmar Embassy in Singapore has announced that Myanmar citizens residing in Singapore are obligated to pay income tax starting from 12 December 2023.
The Ministry of Planning and Finance, through Notification 79/2023 dated 22 November 2023, has stipulated that Myanmar citizens must pay income tax on salary income earned abroad, effective from 1 October 2023.
As a result, the Myanmar Embassy in Singapore will handle passport extensions and consular matters only after the payment of income tax from October 2023 onward. The monthly tax rate to be collected depends on the type of residence permit, with a two per cent tax applied to the set rate. However, holders of student passes will be exempted from paying income tax upon presentation of their current school certificates.
Similarly, individuals classified as dependents, including spouses, parents, sons or daughters of taxpayers, can extend their status by submitting the household list, birth chart, and marriage contracts. Those returning to Myanmar for various reasons are required to bring their income tax receipts, dependency certificates, or student certificates to the Myanmar Embassy in Singapore. — TWA/TKO
