The Green Turtle is the predominant species laying eggs along the coast of Myanmar, although the country operates three sea turtle conservation sites aimed at protecting five species of these animals along its coast, where the turtles come every year to lay their eggs, U Phone Maw, the head of the Thameehla Island Sea Turtle Conservation camp in Ngaputaw Township, Ayeyawady Region, told the Global New Light of Myanmar on 8 May.
In Myanmar, sea turtle conservation centres are located in Kadonkani of Bokale Township, Thameehla Island of Ngaputaw Township in Ayeyawady Region, as well as on Launglon Island in the Taninthayi Region. Among them, Thameehla Island remains one of the few islands in the world where sea turtles, considered rare globally, come to lay their eggs every month, regardless of the season.
There are seven species of sea turtles worldwide, with six species found in ASEAN waters and five species in the waters of Myanmar. — ASH/TH
