According to the daily price rates issued by the Bayintnaung Wholesale Centre, local chilli prices have been trending downwards, while prices of bell peppers from the delta region have been on the rise. Meanwhile, the price of long chillies remains low.
Currently, there is a large influx of monsoon long chillies and new bell peppers from areas such as Wakema, Maubin, Pantanaw, and Einme.
A local chilli trader from Yangon, U Aung Tun, informed the Global New Light of Myanmar that around 300 bags of long chillies from Danubyu have been traded in the Yangon market recently. He noted that the price of low-quality chillies in March was higher than the current price of long chillies.
Comparing with previous years, the data indicates that chilli prices in May 2024 are lower than those of the same period in 2022 and 2023, although they still remain higher than in 2021.
In the past, Indian chillies were imported into the domestic market, known for their quality and higher prices. However, in recent years, similar quality chilli species have been domestically cultivated, leading to a decrease in Indian chilli imports.
Chilli trader Ko Hla Han also reported to the GNLM that chillies from the delta area are arriving in the Yangon market under various names. — TWA/TMT
