Women’s Football: Myanmar advances to final match after big win over Thailand

Myanmar Women’s Team has already qualified for the Final of the XXXII SEA Games Women’s Football Event by trouncing Thailand 4-2 in the semifinal match played at RSN Stadium, Phnom Penh, Cambodia yesterday.
With a wonderful performance, the Myanmar team made come-from-behind action, scored four goals from a two-goal loss, defeated the famous Thai team, and advanced to the final. The Myanmar women’s squad made a return appearance in the SEA Games women’s football tournament only this year, after last reaching the finals in 2005.
Team Myanmar also qualified for the SEA Games finals for the fourth time.
The starting line-up of the Myanmar women’s squad was made up of core players.
At the beginning of the match, the Thai team took advantage of the Myanmar team’s defensive mistakes and scored a series of leading goals.
Saowalak Pengngam scored the first goal for Thailand in 11 minutes and Orapin Waenngoen made the leading or second goal at 18 minutes.
The Myanmar team did not lose its strategy and attacked with understanding, and at the 43-minute mark, Yupar Khaing produced the first equalizer for Team Myanmar.
In the second half, the Myanmar team was eager for more equalizers, and at the 48-minute mark, Win Theingi Tun scored the second goal from Yupar Khaing’s pass.
With the score tied at 2-2, the Myanmar squad became more motivated and in 53 minutes, San Thaw Thaw used Khin Marlar Tun’s assist to score the winning goal.
After that, the Thai team tried to score an equalizer, but Myanmar had the best defensive control and Myat Noe Khin scored the fourth goal to ensure the victory in the 90+2 minutes.
Myanmar will face Viet Nam in the final game on 15 May as team Viet Nam beat Cambodia 4-0 in the other semifinal match.
On the same day, Thailand will take on Cambodia for the bronze medal. —Shine Htet Zaw/KZL
