Renovation carried out at historic Bagaya monastery in Inwa

This year, K18 million is alotted for the renovation work to the damaged floors and steps along the passages of Bagaya monastery in Inwa, Mandalay Region, according to the Department of Archeology and National Museum (Mandalay Branch).
Renovation works started with a fund of K10 million in the 2019-2020FY, and 40 per cent of the works finished in the 2020-2021FY.
The Department of Archeology and National Museum maintains intact cultural heritage in all archaeological sites and adapts it to modern living standards.
Bagaya monastery is one of the most visited by local and foreign tourists. It is an ancient building with high historical and cultural value.
“We are maintaining the monastery for its sustainability as it has high historical and cultural value. Renovations are underway with teak wood, as it is a wooden monastery built with teak wood,” said Deputy Director of the Department U Nay Naing Tun.
Bagaya monastery was built in 1144 ME during the reign of King Bodawpaya by Minister Nay Myo Kyaw Htin. It was constructed with 267 teak posts – the biggest one is nine feet in diameter and sixty feet in height as the highest.
