International Customs Day serves as a global tribute to customs organizations worldwide, recognizing the dedication of customs personnel who diligently impose rightful taxes for the State and uphold customs regulations. Having joined the World Customs Organization (WCO) in 1991, Myanmar has celebrated this noteworthy day for 33 years.
Looking back, the World Customs Organization (WCO) is dedicating the year 2022 to the amplification of Customs Digital Transformation. This involves embracing a Data Culture and building a robust Data Ecosystem. In 2020, Customs4trade collaborated with the International Chamber of Commerce in Belgium (ICC Belgium) to institute the Customs Professional Award, recognizing individuals utilizing their customs expertise to support the growth of companies in international trade.
This year’s International Customs Day theme is “Customs-Engaging Traditional and New Partners with Purpose.” This theme aims to navigate challenges and seize opportunities amid the rapidly evolving international trade landscape. Myanmar, a steadfast member of the World Customs Organization (WCO) since 1991, has continued to mark International Customs Day for over three decades.
By emphasizing the duties of government employees, there is a call to garner public trust in every government service. Adherence to the Model Code of Ethics and Conduct released by the World Customs Organization is stressed, emphasizing the pivotal role of modern techniques over traditional methods. Ongoing plans include linking with the National Single Window based on the Myanmar Automated Cargo Clearance System (MACCS).
The Department of Customs in Myanmar plays a pivotal role in serving the nation’s interests by generating revenues for the State. Department staff members emphasize the importance of levying deserved taxes on imported cargo. Businesses involved in customs-related measures are urged to follow government, ministry, and Customs Department policies to enhance trade facilitation by simplifying customs procedures and ensuring the proper collection of Customs Duties and Taxes.
The commitment of the Department of Customs to its duties and functions underscores its dedication to national interests and revenue generation for the State. By emphasizing deserved taxes on imported goods, customs staff contribute to the overall economic welfare, promoting adherence to policies that facilitate trade and ensure proper revenue collection. The staff members need to accelerate the momentum to brighten up the dignity of the department. They must avoid bribes when serving customs duties and levying taxes on imported goods. If so, incomes from customs services can be changed into deserved revenue for the State, and these will be spent on nation-building endeavours.
