Around 300 tonnes of new sun-dried coarse salt were produced in Mon State in January 2024, according to an official from the Mon State Salt Business Association.
It rained slightly in January in Mon State, and salt production declined somewhat. In this year’s salt season, it is predicted to produce about 45,000 tonnes of sun-dried coarse salt, he said.
“Some were produced before rain in January. There was a slight rain on 26 January so the production declined slightly. Now it is produced again. The production was just about 300 tonnes in January,” he said.
In Mon State, sun-dried salt is mainly manufactured in Thanbyuzayat township and majorly sold to Taninthayi Region as well as Mandalay Region. Currently, the price of coarse salt is about K170 per viss, and the price of refined salt is between K320 and K330 a viss, he said.
“The salt price fluctuates depending on supply and demand. Salt manufacturing needs to rely on the weather, so the price gets high if the yield is low when it rains. There was rain in January so the price climbs up about K10-K20 a viss,” he said. The export licence is still underway for exporting Mon State-produced sun-dried salt to Japan and South Korea. — MT/ZS/ED
