Able Seafarer Engine (Reg:III/5) Certificate of Proficiency course for seamen has been modified in accordance with the prescribed learning hours of the IMO Model Course, according to the Department of Marine Administration.
The course, which was previously 240 hours, has been increased to 584 hours from 1 April in line with the requirements of the IMO Model Course 7.16, the DMA’s Marine Engineering Section announced on 5 March.
The time allocation includes three categories of 240 hours for Able Seafarer Engine Part-I (Theory) Course, 60 hours for Able Seafarer Engine Part-II (Simulator) Course and 284 hours for Able Seafarer Engine Part-III Practical (Fitter) Course.
Only on completion of all three courses will the trainee be awarded the Able Seafarer Engine (Reg:III/5) Certificate of Proficiency and details of certificates of completion for different kinds of courses will be described in All in one Certificate.
Moreover, seamen wishing to obtain Seafarer Engine (Reg:III/5) certificate after attending MEO Class III (OEW) Workshop Skills will be exempted from attending 284 hours of Able Seafarer Engine Part-III Practical (Fitter) Course, it said.
