The Irrawaddy Dolphin protection team of the Mandalay Region Fisheries Department recently reported that the number of Irrawaddy Dolphins in the Mandalay-Mingun protected area has now reached 15 individuals.
The team conducts regular monitoring of the dolphin population three times a month. According to U Maung Maung Lay, chair of the team, they observed 15 dolphins in the waters near Mingun on 14 March. During a previous observation on 4 March, 17 individuals were spotted in the Mandalay-Kyaukmyaung area.
With the lower water levels in the Ayeyawady River during this season, the collaborative fishing technique between fishermen and dolphins has become more noticeable.
This activity has garnered significant attention from visitors. Similarly, visitors are drawn to Ayekyun Village, known for its community-based tourism, in Madaya Township, to stay and observe the dolphins. — ASH/NT
