According to U Soe Win, a secretary of the U Bein Bridge maintenance team, the Taungthaman Thingyan Festival will take place at Taungthaman Lake, where the famous U Bein Bridge is located in Mandalay Region. The safety inspection and maintenance work for the bridge will reportedly commence in the last week of March.
This year’s Taungthaman Thingyan Festival will feature water pavilions, dance and entertainment pavilions, and a food donation program around the Taungthaman Lake.
The bridge, constructed in the year 1211 of the Myanmar calendar during the reign of King Bagan of the Amarapura era, has 1,086 pillars and spans a length of 3,987 feet. It is over 170 years old and took two years to build. — ASH/MKKS
