Myanmar ships over 5,000 MTs of shrimp to foreign markets in H1

Myanmar exported over 5,335 metric tonnes of shrimps worth US$20.927 million to global markets in the H1 of the current financial year 2023-2024 beginning 1 April, according to the Department of Fisheries.
Myanmar’s seaborne shrimp export was estimated at 4,783.24 tonnes worth $18.028 million and the border saw exports of 552.327 tonnes worth $2.899 million between 1 April and 30 September of the current FY.
The shrimp exports plunged compared to that of the year-ago period. Myanmar sent 8,048.139 tonnes worth $28.245 million by sea and 578.818 tonnes worth $2.634 million via the border in the corresponding period last FY, reaching 8,626.957 tonnes worth $30.879 million. This FY, the shrimp export volume is down by 3,291.39 tonnes valued at $9.952 million.
Myanmar’s fishery export has returned to normalcy. Yet the export volume still declines compared to that in the pre-coronavirus period.
In addition to maritime trade to global markets, Myanmar delivers fishery products including fish and shrimps to neighbouring countries via border posts. Myanmar exports shrimp to over 40 foreign countries including China, Thailand, Bangladesh and Japan, mostly to Thailand, followed by China. — NN/EM
