Myanmar vows to ensure nuclear and radioactive safety

Ambassador U Min Thein, Myanmar’s permanent representative to the United Nations and other international organizations based in Vienna, reaffirmed the country’s long-term efforts to ensure the overall safety of all nuclear and other radioactive materials and sites at the International Conference on Nuclear Security held in Austria on 21 May, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In his speech at the conference, held at the Vienna International Centre from 20 to 24 May, the Myanmar’s permanent representative said that Myanmar recognizes the IAEA’s efforts to ensure nuclear safety around the world and to strengthen security and non-proliferation. He highlighted the inclusion of atomic security measures based on UN Security Council Resolution No 1540 in Myanmar’s 2014 anti-terrorism law, Myanmar’s ratification of the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material (CPPNM) and its amendments in 2017, as well as the country’s political commitment to the Code of Conduct on the Safety and Security of Radioactive Sources.
His speech also mentioned Myanmar joining the IAEA Incident and Trafficking Database (ITDB) in 2022, as well as its continued participation in the IAEA’s research project on the use of detection technologies and equipment for nuclear materials.
