About 2500 tonnes of avocados have been exported to Thailand, which is the only market for this Myanmar agricultural produce, according to an official from Myanmar Avocado Producer and Exporter Association.
“We are currently exporting only to Thailand. About 1000 to 2500 tonnes of different varieties have been exported since the beginning of avocado season in August,” he said.
It is exported via Tachilek border trade route at K 3000-4000 per kilo and the price is declining compared to last year.
“Since Thailand is the only destination, the market declines. Last year, it sold for K 6000-8000 a kilo and the current price is between K 3000 and 4000,” he said.
Wholesale demand in the local market is low at K 4000 to 7000 a kilo.
Although there was an offer from India to buy 1000 tonnes this avocado season, they were not able to export due to various reasons, he said.
“We could not export (to India). It was late. Other reasons include weather conditions, unstable foreign exchange rate, not knowing how to pay the farmers and some regulations that could not be overcome,” he said.
