At the end of August, the price of Monywa Thar onion stood at K480 per viss in the retail market. However, the Myittha onion touched K520 per viss in the retail market.
The price has been falling during the COVID-19 period due to traffic congestion and disease prevention measure, which have led to the lower production cost. The onion prices may fluctuate depending on the spreading of the pandemic and restrictions thereof.
Besides, the kitchen crops such as garlic and potato prices are also inching upwards in the local market.
The prevailing prices of garlic move in the range of K2,600-4,800 per viss depending on varieties at the end of August. Due to the closure of the Sino-Myanmar border checkpoints, there has been a shortage of garlic imported from China in recent days.
As a result, the price of the stocked garlic in the retail market has skyrocketed. Further, the tomato price also dramatically surged to K1,100 per viss in the retail market.
The onions are primarily grown in Mandalay, Magway and Yangon regions, Nay Pyi Taw and Shan State. —NN/GNLM
