A final disposal site (FDS) project in Yangon is being implemented by the Yangon City Development Committee.
The Urban Environmental Conservation & Sanitation Department under YCDC is constructing the new dumpsite project with the technology used in Fukuoka town, Japan, on 187.3 acres of land near Thayetpinchaung village in Dagon Myothit (Seikkan) Township, Yangon Region.
The Fukuoka method is a semi-aerobic landfill design which speeds up the decomposition of waste materials, improves the quality of water drained from the site and reduces methane gas with pipelines. Currently, paving works for the entrance and exit roads of the final disposal site project in Thayetpinchaung are underway.
YCDC collected about 1,000 tonnes of waste from townships in the East and South District of Yangon Region and moved them to Dawei Chaung dumpsite daily and approximately 1,500 tonnes of garbage from West and North townships, around 50 tonnes of dump from the Dala township in South District, and about eight tonnes of trashes from the Seikkyi/Khanaungto township are transported to Htein Bin dumpsite, Dala disposal site and the Seikkyi/Khanaungto landfill respectively.
The Hteinbin landfill is the largest with an area of 242 acres among other landfills in Yangon. — TWA/GNLM
