Shan State Buddhist University sees its first convocation

The first convocation of the Shan State Buddhist University in Taunggyi Township and its graduates seen on 21 January 2024.

The first convocation of Shan State Buddhist University in Taunggyi Township, Shan State (South), was held on 21 January, according to Venerable Dr Pandavabhipala, registrar of the university.
At the convocation, one doctorate, 33 Master of Arts, 18 postgraduate diplomas in Pali and Buddhist Studies, 13 Graduate Diplomas in Library and Information Management, nine Bachelor of Arts in Lik Loung (Shan Literature), and one Diploma in Lik Loung (Shan Literature) graduates were conferred with educational credentials by the University Chancellor, Dr Dhammasami, widely known as Oxford Sayadaw. These graduates finished their studies between 2018 and 2023.
“Shan State Buddhist University has been open for eight years, reaching its sixth academic year. But this is the first time the university convened a convocation,” Venerable Dr Pandavabhipala said.
Professor Dr Aung Tun Thet from Yangon and Dr Peter Skilling from Canada were given honorary professorships. Shan literature historian Professor Sai Kham Mai was bestowed with an honorary doctorate. — ASH/TH
