Mo Mo, people’s much-loved elephant, undergoes health assessments after showing a sing of aging

Mo Mo, an old female elephant still much loved by people atYangon Zoo, is undergoing a medical checkup for what the zoo says is an aging sign with a wart-like growth on her upper toenail.

Mo Mo, now 71 years old, was donated to the zoo by U Khun Sanda of Loikaw, Kayah State in 1961 when she was seven.


After a common sign of age – a wart on her upper toenailelephant experts Dr. Khin Maung Win (White Elephant garden) and Dr. Zaw Min Oo, deputy assistant manager from the Myanmar Timber Enterprise, were called in to provide advice and daily care.

In her old age, Mo Mo tends to choose different kinds of food according to her nature. As she changes her diet almost everyday, more food and supplements are being fed according to her preferences and other care tasks such as making a sand bed for a comfortable night‘s sleep and close monitoring are also being carried out.
