Avocado market sees high potential upon foreign demand, high prices

Proposals from foreign countries and high prices in the opening season raised market potential this year, according to the Myanmar Avocado Producer and Exporter Association.
The floor price of avocado is K3,500 per kilogramme, which rose from K2,500 per kilo registered last year, showing an increase of K1,000 per kilo.
The price is likely to move up depending on the quality.
Harvest season for Hass avocado commenced. Avocado yield might increase as well, the association stated.
Hass avocado will enter the market at the end of October. Thailand proposed to buy Myanmar’s avocado. The stakeholders in the avocado supply chain will make efforts to have a strong market and penetrate more international markets.
Beyond the beverage industry, the creation of an avocado-based products market needs to be supported. An awareness campaign for avocados is required to pick if the avocado is ripe or not.
Efforts are being undertaken to achieve government-to-government (G-to-G) pacts for legitimate trade with China and Thailand.
Avocado is primarily grown in northern and southern Shan State and PyinOoLwin, Mandalay Region. It is a perennial crop and it can be harvested after three years of cultivation. The harvest season commences in October. — NN/EM
