Coop societies sell agricultural inputs worth K5 bln in Oct

Cooperative societies sold K5.09 billion worth of chemical fertilizers, seeds and pesticides to farmers in 78 townships in October, according to the Ministry of Cooperatives and Rural Development.
The Cooperative Department under the ministry has been selling agricultural inputs at reasonable prices for the development of the agricultural sector and the enhancement of the socioeconomic well-being of farmers.
Last month, a total of 10,982 members from 602 societies located in 78 townships made purchases, acquiring 88,782 bags of chemical fertilizers valued at K5.07 billion, seeds worth K0.22 million, and pesticides totalling K20 million.
Statistics showed that 34 million acres of farmland will require over 492,000 tonnes of agricultural inputs for this financial year. Efforts are underway for the farmers to purchase quality inputs in time. — TWA/NT
