Kyukok garlic price moves up on low supply

The imported Kyukok garlic price went up on 24 February 2024 due to low supply on borders when the new Shan garlic enters the market, Ko Thein Myint, a garlic seller on Yetama Street in Bayintnaung commodity depot area, told the Global New Light of Myanmar (GNLM).
Kyukok garlic prices increased to K9,700-K9,800 per viss on 24 February from K9,000-K9,200 per viss on 19 February.
Meanwhile, the old Shan garlic hit K16,500-K17,800 per viss. The new garlic supplied by Shan State still has small moisture content. Yet, the appearance of old garlic is quite bad.
The new Shan garlic fetched K12,500-K14,000 per viss. The garlic is cultivated in Aungban and Taunggyi areas in Shan State in October-November. They start flowing into the market in February and March.
The price of single clove garlic reached approximately K30,000 per viss at Yangon’s retail market. Yet, they are in low demand. Kyukok garlic prices touched the highest of K17,000 per viss in mid-2023 and K17,800 per viss in early 2024. Some Shan garlic is exported to Thailand through border posts. — TWA/KK
