Lend a helping hand to leprosy patients

Article

The World Leprosy Day designated by French journalist-cum-humanitarian Raoul Follereau started in 1954. The day is commemorated on the last Sunday of January every year. World Leprosy Day falls on 30th January this year.
The day aims to support the patients suffering from leprosy to receive treatment and to raise awareness of leprosy disease to the people. Whenever World Leprosy Day falls, every country holds community-based awareness of the disease, counselling and giving treatment to such patients free of charge.
World Leprosy Day was marked on the day when Mahatma Gandhi, the paramount leader of India, died in the assassination on 30 January 1948. Global countries aim to realize the theme of World Leprosy Day 2022, as ‘United for Dignity’.
The campaign honours the individuals who have experienced leprosy by sharing their empowering stories and advocating for mental wellbeing and the right to a dignified life free from disease-related stigma. The World Health Organization stated that a total of 101,000 new patients are found across the world every second.
Leprosy is an infectious chronic disease that targets the nervous system, especially the nerves in the cooler parts of the body: the hands, feet, and face. The initial symptoms of leprosy are not noticeable. If the patients do not receive the proper treatment, they will face subsequences of the disease such as damage of the body organs, blindness and situation to cut the limbs. As such, the patients will be disabling in their lives.
If the patients take the proper treatment in its initial stage, it can prevent the disabilities of body organs. According to the best therapy of the WHO, MDT drugs can stop the infection of leprosy to others who closely live together with the patient.
If anyone faces leprosy patients, they should comfort the patients and give a helping hand to them. The souls of patients must be encouraged with active and brave stories. It is because everybody is trying to overcome various challenges even though they themselves are not patients.
Truly, nobody can suffer from the impacts of any disease and leprosy as well. Likewise, nobody does become the victim of disease without committing anything. To do so, all people need to emphasize a healthy lifestyle. Even if they face infection of any diseases, it is sure that they would overcome it.
