MoEP Union Minister returns from 5th APRC Ministerial Meeting

Union Electric Power Minister U Thaung Han led a Myanmar delegation that recently visited the Masdar City Project on 25 July in the UAE, where they witnessed installation 10 MW of ground-mounted solar and 1 MW of rooftop solar panels. Masdar City aims to promote a greener and more sustainable urban lifestyle, showcasing innovations in long-term sustainability and research development. The project’s success led to it being chosen as the host for the upcoming Conference of Parties-28 (COP-28) in late 2023.
During the fifth meeting of the Asian and Pacific Committee at the ministerial level on 26 July, the delegation engaged in crucial discussions. Firstly, they explored the International Solar Alliance (ISA) Programmes and the Green Grid Initiative (One Sun One World One Grid–GGI- OSOWOG), focusing on the development of a global green power grid and Myanmar’s efforts in solar energy. They also discussed collaborating with neighbouring ASEAN and BIMSTEC member countries to establish cross-country power lines.
The second part of the meeting delved into Solar Storage, including Energy Storage System (ESS) needs and management until 2030, as research in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Long Duration Energy Storage for power distribution from renewable energy and the benefits of Pump Storage Hydropower were examined. Additionally, they discussed a roadmap to achieve the carbon emissions balance.
The delegation also explored Solar Pumps ranging from 1 HP to 100 HP, which operate using solar energy. After a productive trip, the Union minister and the team returned to Myanmar, departing from Abu Dhabi on 27 July. — MNA/KZW
