New international port terminal and airport to be constructed in Mon State

NATIONAL NEWS

The Mon State government has designated the locations to construct one new international airport near Kawparan village of Mudon Township and one new international port terminal between Balauk Nyaungwaing and Wekali villages in Mawlamyine District, according to the state government.
“During the visit of the SAC Chairman on 1 June, he instructed officials to construct a new international airport in Mon State and create a port city as it is located near the sea. The main point is to develop the region’s economy. Therefore, we find the proper location for an airport and conduct a feasibility study. We also conduct the feasibility study to turn Mawlamyine into a seaport,” said an official.
The international airport and port terminal projects will be implemented on 4,626.29 acres of land, the state government said.
“We know that the government will implement an airport and a port in Mon State. I want them to carry out as quickly as possible because our finished products are exported via the sea route. Therefore, we have to rent warehouses in Yangon and transport products to jetties so that we export them to other countries. So, transport charges are high. If they build the port terminal here, we can do the export process directly,” said U Htet Aung, a rubber farmer.
When the two projects are completed, it will develop the local tourism industry and economy and create job opportunities for Mon State. — Min Min/GNLM
