In response to the unfortunate damage inflicted upon the previous archway by cyclonic storm Mocha in May of this year, authorities are taking proactive steps to organize a competition aimed at conceptualizing the new entrance archways to Sittway in the Rakhine State. This ambitious initiative is being spearheaded by the Rakhine State Development Committee, reflecting the region’s commitment to revitalizing its iconic archway.
Designers eager to participate in this prestigious contest are cordially invited to submit their masterpieces to the Rakhine State Development Committee office, with the submission window open from 20 September to 1 October.
Entrants are tasked with creating archway designs that artfully encapsulate the rich cultural heritage of the Rakhine State and its diverse ethnic communities. Their designs must also adhere to essential architectural principles and align seamlessly with the current landscape. Beyond aesthetics, these entries are expected to enhance the prestige of the Rakhine State while offering practical features such as accommodating the passage of cargo trucks, resilience against earthquakes and natural disasters, and an integration with the surrounding environment. It is worth noting that the winning design will receive well-deserved recognition and rewards, as stated by a committee official.
Additionally, designers are encouraged to keep in mind that the new archway will measure an impressive 60 feet in width, and it is imperative that their creations are oriented towards rebuilding the archway in its original location in Sittway, the capital of the Rakhine State.
This competition represents an exciting opportunity for visionary designers to contribute their talents and creativity towards a project of immense cultural and symbolic significance. As we eagerly anticipate the unveiling of the winning design, the entire community is invited to join hands in rebuilding the archway to Sittway, a beacon of hope and resilience in the face of adversity. — ASH/TTA
