The onion market has been quiet in 2022 and 2023 and onion farmers have now relied on summer onion, said farmers and commodity wholesalers.

“Similarly in early 2022, price of Myittha onion was around K2800-K3000 a viss. The price has fallen back in this year too, despite commodity prices are rising,” said a commodity wholesaler.

Currently, price of rainy Myittha onion is K2500-K2600 a viss while retail shops sell at K3000-K4000 a viss.

“We especially rely on summer onion harvests in Tabaung and Tagu. This year’s summer onion is just planted. Some can’t be expected,” said an onion farmer.

At the present, the cost of onion plantation is about K2million an acre, according to farmers.
