Online job scams using TikTok in Myanmar: labour advocate warns

Labour activist Daw Myo Aye says scams promising foreign jobs have been taking place on TikTok, Myanmar’s most popular social network platform.

The victim was first approached to become a friend, then persuaded and cheated.

“In the case I am working on now, the victim was asked to become a friend on TikTok. He did not have a passport. So, they persuaded the victim that the agent would pay for all the costs, from applying for a passport to getting a job abroad, and that they would deduct it from his salary. The victim believed that he would get a salary of K 16 lakh. The scammers target people who know nothing. They cannot cheat those who know,” she said.

Foreign job seekers via agencies need to know whether they are legitimate agencies or not, she suggested.

At present, illegal agencies and fraudulent brokers are targeting those foreign job seekers.

“Some ended up in Iran, instead of Dubai. They were cheated only after they arrived there. Some didn’t even know they had been cheated. I think they were cheated because of lack of knowledge and information. The swindlers find the targets who know nothing and who can be cheated. They are not going to cheat someone who might raise a problem for them, that’s for sure,” she explained.
