Phase one of the construction of the underpass, which connects the Shwedagon Pagoda and the Public Square, has been completed, according to an official.
The underpass, which will link the west entrance to Shwedagon Pagoda, the People’s Square, and the People’s Park in Dagon Township, is being constructed in three sections. The aim is to ensure safety for pedestrians and motorists, facilitate smooth traffic flow, and establish modern infrastructure for easy passage.
The Yangon Region chief minister visited the construction site on the night of 29 February and issued instructions to install iron fences to prevent pedestrians from crossing recklessly, maintain a clean and green environment, and ensure that the work proceeds without causing traffic congestion, adhering to established standards.
The underpass is 23 feet (7 metres) wide and includes four exits, four escalators, and two lifts for people with disabilities that can accommodate just ten passengers each at a time. The project period is about 14 months. — TWA/KZL
