As Ayeyawady Region is a region with many banana plantations, the Region Department of Small Scale Industries, under the guidance of the Ayeyawady Region Chief Minister, is planning to produce and sell consumer goods with raw materials from the banana trunk, said U Soe Naing Htoo, Region Director of the Department of Small Scale Industries.
The trunk of banana, which is a waste product after consuming the fruit from the tree, will be used in producing high-value commodities, and the fibre from the trunk will be used to make consumer goods such as clothes, handbags, shoes and paper. In addition to that, plans are underway to produce COVID-19 protective masks.
It is also learnt that efforts are being made to set and implement a project to produce handicrafts using banana fibre for consumer goods in 2022, and training is being conducted for those who are interested in the office of the Department. – District IPRD (Pathein)/GNLM
