Record-high visitor numbers to Kyaiktiyo in December 2023

Since November 2023, people from all over Myanmar have visited Kyaiktiyo Pagoda daily. As of December, the total number of visitors reached a record-breaking 65,389, with 64,105 domestic travellers and 1,284 foreign tourists, according to U Soe Hla, the Chairman of the Pagoda Trustee’s Board.
He mentioned that December, with holidays and gazette holidays, saw a high influx of pilgrims, making it the busiest time of the year. From January to December 2023, 284,079 domestic pilgrims and 10,214 foreign tourists visited, totaling to 294,293 pilgrims.
About 250 mountain cars run daily to the Kyaiktiyo hill, and hotels, rest houses, and restaurants are open full-time to cater to pilgrims.
The Buddha Pujaniya Festival of the Kyaiktiyo Pagoda is an annual event from the full moon of Kason to the full moon of Nayon. — ASH/TKO
