Of the one million doses of COVID-19 AstraZeneca brand donated by Thailand to the people of Myanmar for use in the COVID-19 vaccination project, 500,000 doses and 500,000 needles arrived at Yangon International Airport by Thai Airways at 9:15 am yesterday.
The handover ceremony of the vaccines and needles to the Myanmar Red Cross Society was held at Yangon International Airport.
General Secretary of Myanmar Red Cross Society Prof Dr Htin Zaw Soe, Deputy General Secretary Dr Tin Tun Aung, Deputy Director of the Public Health Department, Yangon Region Dr Aye Mon Mon Kyaw, and officials, Charge d’affaires Mrs Kanokwan Pengsuwan from the Thai Embassy in Myanmar and the embassy officials attended the event.
The COVID-19 vaccine received from this donation will be widely distributed to relevant regions, states, and rural areas where vaccination coverage is still weak.
The Ministry of Health is stepping up its efforts to ensure that a hundred per cent of the COVID-19 vaccine is fully vaccinated in the targeted groups.
As of 2 April, 27.01 million people have been inoculated in Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory and respective regions and states, and 1.09 million people have been jabbed against COVID-19.
As of 1 April, the ministry had injected 49.96 million COVID-19 vaccines into people across Myanmar.
Repeated doses of the COVID-19 vaccine can reduce the risk of severe disease. All target groups must receive a full dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, as it can significantly reduce hospital admissions and deaths from the disease.
Therefore, the public is urged to actively participate in completing the entire course of the COVID-19 vaccine. — MNA
